The American Financial Collapse is still raging in the winter of 1934. In Duluth, Minnesota, at a dilapidated board-house, the repercussions are most noticeable. While his wife Elizabeth continues to battle with dementia and occasionally displays signs of mental alertness, the property's owner Nick Laine tussles to prevent the bank from seizing the building. He has been having an affair with one of the tenants, Mrs. Neilsen, but is she really what he wants?
The children of Nick and Elizabeth also have issues. Gene struggles with alcohol and lacks a sense of purpose in life, and Marianne is unmarried and with a child on the way. Each of the weird locals and visitors who come and go have their own mysteries and backstories. Their secrets, which range from jail time to blackmail to drug addiction, are eventually revealed amid the poetic music of Bob Dylan.
